Each day pick one amazing thing to do.  Leo Babuta

When I read this I was struck by how often we run from thing to thing looking for something amazing and wonderful in all of them.  What if each day we stopped and consciously picked one amazing thing to do, then did it, and then most importantly took time to savor and appreciate the experience?  Would this change how we saw and appreciated our lives?

Today as we drove home we deliberately took our time and drove slowly so that we could appreciate all of the beautiful trees that were beginning to bloom.  The buds were white and pink and rose colored.  It had just rained and the streets were covered in white blossoms.  It was as if we were driving through a magical fairyland.  Besides the beautiful colors what amazed me most was that these trees were just down the street from us.  I did not have to go far to have an amazing experience which will inspire me to create throughout the week.  It was right in front of me all of the time.

I am going to continue to look for amazing experiences during the next week.  It will be fun to see what I experience and because of those experiences how I see my life differently.  Won't you join me this week in picking one amazing thing to do each day?  If you do decide to join me, I would love to know what happens.

I want to thank Sarah of A Cat-Like Curiosity for choosing me to be her featured linker of the week.  It was such a surprise and a honor.  Today is also the day that my contribution to Creative Dream Journals is posted.  This journal is a collection of writings by dreamers and artists who are hoping to encourage and support the dreams of others who are following their creative path.

Friday's Special Moment of Gratitude

I have started a new series of pastel classes and I am learning so much and because of what I am learning I think I will be shopping very soon for some new supplies.  I have learned that with pastels the materials you use do make a difference and that if I get the right materials I will not have to work so hard to get the picture to look just right.  The problem is that I am not sure what just right means.  I think that is something that is very personal.  For me, just right usually revolves around a picture that evokes a memory.  It reminds me of a time, a place, a person, or an event.  The picture will usually have water in it somewhere and the colors will usually be soothng and peaceful.  I think for each of us "just right" means something different.  It will be interesting to see how my work changes as I get the materials that have been recommended.

As you know it is my practice to share what I am grateful for each week.  This week I am grateful for the power of hope.  As many of you know my husband has a progressive lung disease.  This has been a difficult winter but spring seems to be bringing with it lots of hope.  As with everything in life, this disease has its ups and downs.  Right now, we are on an upward swing and at this time there are lots of reasons for hope. What I have come to understand and celebrate as we go through this journey together is to never give up hope.  There is always a new day, a new direction, a new surprise for us to enjoy.  Tomorrow we go to learn more about becoming part of a research study.  Wouldn't it be wonderful if by participating in this study, we could not only learn something that could help us but many many more people as well?  So today I am grateful for the opportunities that await us and for the power of hope!

I would love to know what you are most grateful for experiencing this week.

Wednesday's Walk - Simplicity

"Life is really simple, but we insist on making it complicated."  Confucius

It has been my practice to dedicate my Wednesday's post to a coaching concept.  I got away from this for about a month but it is something that I hope is helpful so I want to begin again.  A cornerstone of Kaizen-Muse Creativity Coaching is the concept of taking small steps.  Sometimes when I have a new idea it quickly becomes overwhelming because there are so many things to do, so what should be easy and doable becomes complicated and difficult.  But when I break the task down into very tiny small steps, before I know it the picture is painted, or the story is written, or the closet is cleaned.  Is there something that you have wanted to do for a long time but can't seem to get to?  Is it a big task?  Can you break it down into small steps? Can you write those steps down?  Now, can you take just one of those steps.  After each step,  stop, look at what you have accomplished, and then congratulate yourself.  We all need to celebrate what we have accomplished each day.  Remember one small step leads to another and then another and before you know it what seemed large and overwhelming is done!

If you have a project you would like to discuss, I would love to talk to you about it.  Creativity coaching is all about looking at a project or an idea with new and fresh ideas and then moving forward one step at a time to accomplish your goals and your dreams.  I would love to help you move forward one small simple step at a time, beginning today!

Remember:  When you share your dreams with the world, magic happens.

Nature is painting for us, day after day, pictures of infinite beauty if only we have the eyes to see them.
                                                                                                                      John Ruskin (1819-1900)

I am always inspired by nature.  Its colors, its strength, its softness, its beauty.  Whether it is a sunny day or a cloudy one there is always something to see and appreciate.  I love to be out on the water and watch the sunlight dance on the waves or listen as the waves rush up to the shore.  I love to be in a garden filled with beautiful flowers or go walking in the woods surrounded by strong silent trees.  I don't always have the opportunity to do these things but I am finding that I can recreate my experiences again and again through the things I paint.  The more I paint, the more I am inspired by nature.  The more I am inspired by nature, the more I paint.

When I look at the painting above, I am reminded of how much fun we used to have when we went kayaking.  Most of the time we kayaked down slow silent rivers surrounded by trees but once in awhile we went through rapids or up and over small waves and it was always so exciting.  We kayaked with the manatees and in the ocean - both experiences I will never forget.  Each time was different but each time was magical.  When I look at the simple picture above, I remember all of those special Sunday afternoons.

Do you have a picture that you have taken or painted that brings back special memories?  I would love to know what inspires you to paint and what makes a painting special to you.

Friday's Special Moment of Gratitude

Each day is special.  Each day gives a chance to begin over, to create something new, to celebrate who we are. Once we realize that, life becomes filled with endless possibilities.

I had just finished writing the last three sentences when my cell phone decided to give me an opportunity to put into practice what I had just written.  I hate it when things break and all of a sudden for no reason my phone wouldn't work.  So I thought ok, a new possibility to see what I can do.  Can I fix it by myself?  Can I stay calm which is something I can do for any other type of problem but not when the problem is the least bit technical.  Can I see this as an opportunity for growth?

I tried to make the phone work.  Nothing I did made a difference.  So I stayed calm and drove to the Verizon store expecting a long line and an even longer wait to see someone.  Luckily, it did not take long and of course the girl ( who knew what she was doing) had it working in a second.

So I got a chance to see myself in a different light.  I did try to fix the phone.  I did not get irritated with the phone or myself when I couldn't fix it.  I learned that even though I hate it when I don't know what I am doing; it is not that hard to ask for  help.  Sound simple?  It was.  But it is not something I always do. So as silly as it sounds, this week I am grateful that my phone broke and in the process of getting it fixed I learned a few new things about myself.

Is there something that made you smile, grow, or that you are grateful for experiencing this week?

I hope that you will take a minute to visit the artists at Paint Party Friday and Creative Every Day.  It is a wonderful way to begin the weekend.

Embrace the Day!!!

Embrace the day!  When I saw this short but powerful sentence in a magazine I knew it was talking directly to me.  It is time to get back to embracing the day, the hour, and the moment. Spring has sprung and with it comes beautiful colors, warm breezes, sunny days, and endless possibilities.  The last month was filled with gloomy weather and scary health situations for my husband but we weathered the storm and are ready to begin embracing the day once again.  Life is always filled with ups and downs but the better we know ourselves and what we need the easier it is to take control of the situation and embrace the day.  Today I begin a new art class.  I am excited to see what I can do with my new pastels and to meet new people.  I am going to embrace the day and all that has to offer.  How about you?  What can you do to embrace the day and make it uniquely yours and ever so exciting?

Friday's Special Moment of Gratitude

I think that life is about to get back to normal or at least a new normal for us. Which means that I am going to get back to blogging more.  When things were so hectic with doctor's visits, new equipment, and new medicines to be decided upon the words just didn't seem to flow.  So I took a short break from blogging.  Now that life has begun again, I realize how much I have missed blogging regularly. It is an important part of my life and a practice that I am really glad that I started.

This weekend is supposed to be warm and sunny.  A perfect weekend for watching soccer games and planting flowers.  A perfect weekend to sit on the porch and read.  A perfect weekend to paint or write or sketch.  It would be a perfect weekend to have a picnic in a field of flowers - I'm just not sure where there is one except for in my imagination right now. But no matter we decide to do, I know we will have fun.  It's too important not to.

Each Friday I reflect upon what I am most grateful for experiencing during the  week.  This week it's all the "normal" things I sometimes take for granted.  A perfect cup of coffee, singing happy birthday to my grandson,  getting great advice from my son,  getting back to yoga, buying new pastels, laughing with my husband, talking about art with a friend.  These are the things that make my life special everyday but especially this week.

Is there something that has made you smile this week?  Is there something that you are especially grateful for?

Friday's Special Moment of Gratitude

It is amazing how a picture can make you feel.  I had fun painting the picture above but when I look at it I feel rather dull and listless.  It's been a difficult two weeks and that is the last feeling I want to experience.
Picture
When I look at this picture I know that it definitely needs some work but I love the colors.  They remind me of spring and sunshine and blue skies and water. It makes me feel happy and optimistic and looking forward to what comes next.  It is amazing how color and music and nature can change a dreary day into a bright sunny adventure filled with special moments.  Sometimes I forget that it is not the day but the moment that counts.  But when I take out my pastels and take a deep breath and begin to create even for a short time, I remember what really counts and for that I am very grateful.
What are you most grateful for this week?

Friday's Special Moment of Gratitude

When I started my gratitude practice over a year ago, this was the week that it was all about.  Not the week that it was easy to find things to be grateful for but the week that was filled with challenges and scary moments.  Even though this week was filled with doctor's appointments, tests, new medical equipment, uncertainty, and fear it was also a week filled with kindness, smiles, returned phone calls, honesty, and friendship.  I wonder if I had not started this practice of gratitude if I would have noticed how many people took the time to smile at us as we so slowly walked by with an oxygen tank.  Would I have noticed how excited everyone was today when my husband seemed to feel so much better?  Would I have appreciated the nurse who said that I didn't look tired today but looked so refreshed?  I hope I would have.  But by building this practice of gratitude it comes so much more naturally to see the positive even when you are scared, tired, and overwhelmed.

There was not a lot of time to paint or write this week but I did manage a quick (very quick pastel) this morning.  It felt good to paint and to be creative for a minute.  I am going to work on this some more next week.  I'm trying new paper and different strokes and blending with my finger very little.  I am not sure if I like it, but time will tell.

I hope that everyone will have a great weekend and look for those special moments to enjoy and be grateful for.  They are always there, we just have to slow down and notice them.
