Starting Over

"It is not wrong to go back to that which you have forgotten."  West African Proverb

When I first started painting I would only use watercolors.  Then it was watercolor pencils and for the past several years it has been pastels.  I loved the way the pastels felt on my fingers as I moved them across the paper.  But suddenly my watercolors have been calling me again.  The funny thing is I feel as though I am beginning all over again. Things don't come as naturally as they once did.  But I am sure with practice and patience it will feel familiar before long.

Practice and patience.  Those are two important words.  It is hard to get better at anything in life without practice and for most of us patience.  So as I begin to work with my watercolors once again I will remember those two words -  practice and patience.  I used them for years with my yoga and I did get better.  I relied on them when I wanted to become a better and better teacher and now creative living coach.  And now I'll repeat them again each time I begin to paint.  Practice and patience.  It will be interesting to see just how far those two simple words will take me.  I think that will be my new mantra - Practice and Patience!  It feels just right.

Do you have a mantra or affirmation that you say to help you stay focused?  I would love to hear it.

When you share your dreams and your talent with the world, magic happens.  Let the magic begin!

A very positive mantra!! There is a new feel to your art...in a very good way though. Although it may be a starting over... it's fresh and beautiful!! There is a newness to it too... A powerful message... we may go back but it just might not be quite the same as it used to be... However it's a beautiful new experience!! Great post! Gorgeous artwork!!

This is really beautiful. Going back can be a good thing. Relearning what you once knew. It is all filed in the back of the brain somewhere. Have a very nice Sunday.

There's a real flow between the light and dark areas. Although it is abstract, it creates a real sense of the water meeting the land. Very nice.

You have not forgotten your watercolors....this is beautiful. This is such a pretty piece of artwork. I agree with you and have to remind myself of it day after day after day....keep trying...do not give up...persevere..do not get in a hurry...take my time and take it a step at a time. Hope you have a lovely week. genie

Hi, Ginny! I really like this water color. It has a lightness and movement that feel like moving forward while you look back. Life offers us uninvited challenges so It seems important to offer ourselves creative challenges too. My mantra may be "Keep going, keep creating".
Happy day! Sheila

Hello Ginny,
Thank you for adding your thoughts on paper to my blog post:) I definitley see how the paper would have an effect on pastels or watercolor. There's no economical way to practice with those mediums.

I love this watercolor and it looks like you've found your way back already with that medium.

Lately my mantra is from one of Ben Howard's songs:
keep your head up. keep your heart strong.
