I thought Whitman's quote was perfect for this time of year. The holidays are behind us, the resolutions made, or the word of the year chosen. Now, it's time to put those resolutions or words to work. But I've decided that as I put my word Build to good use I am going to do it with a feeling of joy. As I build better health habits I want to exercise with a joyful feeling. Even if exercising isn't the thing I most want to do, I am going to try to remember how happy I will feel when I am finished or when I know that I am stronger. It's easy to feel joy when I am painting or writing but I am not always filled with joy when I look at the final product. This year I am going to celebrate the painting no matter what the outcome. It's easy to be disappointed in something I paint but I am going to look at each painting as a step closer to becoming the artist I want to be.
When you think of something that you do that produces joy, what is it? Do you make time for this activity often? Is it something you should do more? This is an exciting time of year. It is a time for new beginnings and fresh starts. I hope that as you challenge yourself and experience new things you will always let those challenges and experiences produce joy not only for you but for those you love.
You don't need diamonds to make your light shine brighter and brighter. It comes from knowing who you are, what you love to do, and sharing your dreams and yourself with the world. Then it is easy to sparkle.
