Friday's Special Moment of Gratitude

Several weeks ago at my art class I painted this picture using acrylics.  It was fun and something different but I wasn't entirely happy.  I don't know much about acrylics and I wasn't sure the brush strokes looked as they should but it was a good class and I enjoyed what I was doing.

Picture
Last week our class was cancelled so I decided to recreate the above painting only I used pastels instead.  I changed the colors, took away a vase, added taller flowers and although it is far from perfect I did like the change.  I especially liked working with pastels again.  They are my favorite.

Today I got out my watercolor pencils. It has been a long time since I have used them and it felt good to experiment and to see what I could create. I especially liked working with the Derwent Inktense pencils.  Their colors are vivid and rich.

It was fun working with all three mediums on the same concept and is definitely an exercise I will do again.  While having fun, I learned a little about painting and alot about myself as a creative person.  Who could ask for more?

Along with joining the other artists at Paint Party Friday and Creative Every Day, Friday is also the day I blog about what I am grateful for experiencing this week.  This week I saw and heard  the word expand three or four times.   I began to wonder if the universe was trying to tell me to expand what I am doing. Should I write more on my blog?  Should I try to coach more people?  Should I take more painting classes or write more.  I kept asking myself, "How should I expand my world?"

Then I realized maybe the message wasn't that I should expand more but that I should take a few minutes to recognize and celebrate just how much my world has expanded in the past several years. Since retiring I have met wonderful people from all over the world through blogging.  I have taken classes both online and in person on subjects that fascinate me and help me to grow.  Many of the classes I have taken on the internet have been free offered by talented people who are sharing their passion and their knowledge.  Just the other day my husband and I were able to take a yoga class given by a doctor who specializes in pulmonary hypertension.  She showed the poses, along with modifications for people with PH.  Now he has the information he needs to begin practicing yoga again safely.  It was an incredible experience that can change how he feels every day.

So this week I am very grateful that my world is expanding.  I am grateful to the all of the people who help it expand each day.  And although I do want to continue to expand what I am doing, this week I think it is enough to sit back and reflect and enjoy just how big my world has really gotten because of all of the wonderful people who have taken the time to share their world with me.   To all of you I would like to say, "Thank you!"

I would love to know what you are grateful for this week.

Hello Ginny, great to see all 3 works together. They are all lovely, although my favorite is your pastel one, I feel so light and it gives me such a feeling of freshness when I look at that one, a feeling of peace! Isn't it great how you can get such feelings with art. Keep on having fun and thanks so much for sharing with us Ginny, all your lovely creations and words. xx

How wonderful, Ginny. I like the idea of being grateful for the expansion to your world. Your three works are lovely! I love the energy in the lines in the acrylic but also love the colors and softness of the pastels. Your love for that medium shines through!

I love seeing your various paintings all together-really does give one a good idea of the differences in the choice of mediums. To be grateful for your world expanding-that's beautiful. This week I am especially grateful to have the comfort of a warm home to be in-esp. as we have had record cold and terribly gusty winds.Happy PPF!

Beautiful art, great exercise in different mediums and beautiful thoughts, too!
I'm grateful that I had a most interesting and inspiring trip to another country this week. But most grateful I am to be back home with family! :)

Ah, but what SHOULD an acrylic brush-stroke look like? I am beginning to realise (in middle age) that there is no such thing as 'should' or 'must' in art. Art is. What you create is art. If people don't like it, fine. If they do, even better! But I simply cannot create anything worthwhile if I'm doing it according to what other people think it 'should be'. And I suspect you find it difficult, too.

I like your pastel 'panels' best, because it's clear that it is exactly what you wanted. You did it for yourself, and yourself alone, and it shows. It's bright, fresh, clean, and true.

I've just completed my first painting with acrylics and nearly ruined it thinking about what it 'should be'. Finally I got fed up and started to have fun, thinking it wasn't going to amount to anything worth showing anyone, and suddenly it all came together for me. Whether I'll remember that lesson next time is anyone's guess!

I have just bought some Inktense pencils too - they are SO much nicer than ordinary watercolour pencils, aren't they?

Was it intentional that you wrote about your world expanding, while exploring your open window scene? Beautiful work. So glad your husband found a safe way to practice yoga. The benefits will be amazing for him. Happy PPF!

What a terrific exercise - I think I will have to do that myself. Love all 3 of them - they are all quite different looking. Happy PPF
