Why Create?

Why create?
Do you have a purpose when you are creating or is being creative who you are?  I had two conversations recently which made me think about why I write, paint and now take pictures.
Last week I received an email from David who is working on behalf of  Vistaprint.  He had read my blog and thought I might be interested in using some of their products. ( I do think I will make a photo calendar from some of the pictures I have taken especially after talking to my son who told me that he uses their company and really likes their products.)  Then, later in the week I was talking to a friend who said if I wrote blogs for other people and made money by doing this it might give me a purpose for writing.
Both conversations made me pause and think about why I create and if I have a purpose for what I am doing. I believe my reasons for creating are simple.  I create because I love to and it is a way to express myself. I create because without thinking about it I have always been writing or drawing or designing something.  Being creative is part of who I am.   I create because it is a way to communicate with others.  It is a way to let the world know what I think and feel.  I create because it gives me joy. I create because it challenges me while at the same time I am having fun. And simplest of all.  I create because I want to and it makes me happy.  If someone asked you why you create something every day, what would you tell them?

I didn't realise it at the time but when I was showing my work in galleries and having a lot of exhibitions I was making it for the purpose of people buying it. Since I've stopped doing that for the last 2 years, my work has changed and I have just as much, if not more satisfactin from painting a journal page that no-one will see!
I create because that is what keeps me feeling like I'm alive. ;o)

Self expression! Sharing my vision. Creating makes me feel happy!

I've asked myself that same question time & time again.

i create because it is who i am. It makes my heart sing and gives my life more meaning. When i find something that makes my heart sing, i stick with it. :-)

Happy Monday! (found you via AEDM)

I create because it is true happiness for me. I feel such freedom when my hands are covered in paint and ink. I find such joy in sharing the art/process & it has helped me discover more about myself than anything else I have ever done.

I create for myself because it's something I love to do. I enjoy my blog because I love the blogging community and I've met so many wonderful people through it who have been so inspiring and supportive. It's something I love doing and I truly don't care if I ever make any money from it. To me, it a worthwhile adventure because it brings me a lot of joy ~ xo

Why do I create? When I don't create I feel constricted and unhappy. When I do create I feel expanded and happy.

Thanks so much for your visit and comments. As a new visitor to your site from AEDM, I love your art and your thoughtful comments. Reading your posts is a pleasure.

I just started keeping my first art journal about 6 months ago and though I don't work in it every day, I love having it there, lurking in the background, waiting for me to come fill it. I also really enjoy my photography and exploring the many options of PSE and textures. So, I create because I feel incomplete and bored (and boring) if I don't.

I look forward to seeing more of your beautiful work.

Wow, I can identify with this post. I love how posed the question about creativity. It's an important thing to think about, especially if you enjoy creative activities.

My issue is with people who think creativity MUST have a financial purpose. I can't how many times people ask me if I make money as a writer or a photographer. If I say no, they tend to immediately place my work into the deadly "hobby" category:~)

For me, writing, even more than photography, is a vocation. It's something I yearn to do; I'm never bored when I'm writing. Frustrated, at times, but never bored.

I loved what you said about why YOU create, especially the ones about how it gives you joy and it's something you do without thinking.

This is very interesting topic. I appreciate you bringing this up. It would be interesting to do a carnival around this topic. Think about it.

BTW the picture above is well framed. I love the petals of the flower off to the my right and the darkness in the background. You did an excellent job with this photograph.

Creativity is as much a part of who we are as humans as appetite. Like good feed, it makes us strong and whole.
