The Joy Diet - Treats

I am having a very hard time relating to some of this week's chapter which surprises me.  Although I understood the point that Martha was making in her example of the pig, it was not a story I enjoyed reading.  When I think of surrounding myself with things that make me feel good or happy I don't think it should be because I am rewarding myself for doing something difficult but because I deserve to be surrounded by things that make me feel good and special. When I complete a difficult task that includes a risk towards my goal, I get a feeling of accomplishment which I treasure.  That is enough of a reward for me.

I did complete the catalog of sensory delights and water kept appearing on my list.  I love to look at water, hear water, feel water, and water shows up in all of my paintings.  So this week when I was walking I walked by the lake.  It was a beautiful fall day and I especially enjoyed the walk because it was by water.  So I intend to take this walk often.  This list was beneficial because it made me more aware of things that I like and that I want to include in my daily life.

I am very interested in knowing if this was a difficult chapter for anyone else.  I think it may be that I just could not relate to the way that Martha presented the information.  One thing I did get from this chapter was how important words are to me.  If something is not presented in a way that I am comfortable with, then I may miss the point.   I need to be very careful that I don't miss some valuable lessons just because the  examples that are used are not something I can relate to easily.

I agree - you don't need to reward yourself. You deserve to surround yourself with things you love simply because you are you!

I had trouble with the pig story, too. I felt so sorry for that poor little pig pushing a shopping cart & not knowing why, just doing for the treats. I'd rather read a story about a pig wallowing in the mud and enjoying the sun on his back.

I can see your point...as though we can't treat ourselves to these things unless we behave a certain way... but I think for me what began as "reward" sifted into being grateful for all of the splendid gifts that I had been taking for granted... it's not about being rewarded for doing something difficult, it's about creating balance and treating yourself with love and celebration. I think it's fantastic that this book has conjured up so many different perspectives!

Sounds like a nice treat to walk beside the lake. There's something very restful about water. We all take something different from this book - some weeks harder for us than others. Keep at it. If we only get a little bit from it at the end at least it is something - and doing it with the support of this amazing group makes the effort all the more worthwhile!

Thank you for sharing your week with treats. You are not alone, I also found this chapter to be really difficult. I found journaling about it throughout the week to be really helpful.

I love water, too. When I think about my favorite landscape to be in, I usually think of the shore - preferable rocky coastlines.

Your comment about the importance of words for you was so interesting. It makes absolute sense to me; I know that I have to be careful not to discard valuable things because of the mood I'm in - that it's important to consider whether something turns me off because of my mood or because of the material itself. And language style can turn me off, too. Yet, in another mood, it might not bother me. A valuable insight you've hit upon.

It is so interesting that each of us reads the chapter through our own personal lens and takes different things away from the reading. Sharing these reactions gives me new insights into the topic.
Thanks for sharing.

Hi Ginny - maybe you're working too hard at this and taking it too literally - I agree some of Martha's analogiesare a little rough and they don't always work for me either. Have fun with this and enjoy!
PS. Water is like that for me too

I love that you (re)discovered your love for all things water. It's amazingn how sometimes the simple questions tap back into a deep truth for us. Hope you have fun playing this week!

Hi I did not find the chapter very difficult. It was actually one of the easier ones in the book. However, I understand your point and well taken.
