Overwhelm - It happens to all of us!

The topic of overwhelm has come up in several conversations with clients this week.  As we worked through it to find a way to overcome this feeling, I realized that talking it through with others was very helpful for me as well.  Although I am not overwhelmed by my work, there are moments when I journey through this new phase in my life when I feel overwhelmed but often do not realize it.  Now, that I am more aware that this is happening to me it will be easier to recognize those moments and handle them with confidence.  The other day when I was preparing for a meeting I suddenly found myself a little nervous.  I was about to do something that was out of my comfort zone but certainly not out of my ability.  So I did the following things which helped.

1. I stopped and took a deep breath.  I then concentrated on breathing for a few seconds
2. I reminded myself that it was ok to ask for help and that I did not have to know how to do everything perfectly.  (The words we speak to ourselves are very important and will affect how we act)
3. I visualized the meeting going very smoothly and it did.

It didn't take long to do the above three things but it helped so much.  Recognizing what I was feeling and then doing something about it always makes a difference for me and those I work with.  Hopefully, these three steps can help you as well.

Friday is the day I share a joyful moment that happened during the week.  Last night I went to a book club for the first time. The other women had all worked together for years and had a long history together.  Yet, they made me feel very welcome and I had a lovely time.  I am so grateful for all of the people in my life who are reaching out to share their special moments with me.  What was your moment of joy?

When you share your dreams and your talent, magic happens.  Let the magic begin!

painting is a good way to just be in the moment and for a while not be overwhelmed

those are very wise steps to take when confronted by something that has one a bit doubtful or uncertain Ginny. I try to use them too. I mentioned it in another comment to someone - the older I am getting , the more moments of joy I recognize and don't take for granted. However, I will say that my moment of joy today is to have a full day of sunshine before another impending snowstorm beginning tonight.

thanks so much for helping me with overwhelm. I had a great call with Beth and Kim really helped me too. Now on to a fabulous weekend. That's a lovely serene painting.

So glad you were able to overcome the overwhelming feeling. I agree being forearmed is the only way to tackle it! This week I felt joy when my daughter took care of all the cooking and I didn't have to worry about a thing!!

I love your Pause Button Actions (as I call them)! Awareness of breath is amazing Medicine. As is knowing that help is only a request away. And visualization ... can be powerful stuff!

As for Joy, I seek it in every experience. Annnnd usually find it, even when it seems hopeless. :)

And your painting/sketch - lovely!

Ginny, what a wonderful post and great reminder. I really needed this as I was just telling hubby I'm feeling overwhelmed and not sure how to balance all that's on my plate at the moment. Thank you for sharing such an inspirational post!

I'm so happy you felt welcome at the a new book club! It can be intimidating to start something new, especially if everyone else has already been connected for a while. I hope that it brings you much joy. My book club rejuvenates me for days after each meeting.

Thanks for the advice about feeling overwhelmed. While I haven't necessarily felt that, I have had some scary things happen. When I'm nervous for whatever reason, I find I take shallow breaths. So, this post reminded me to take some deep cleansing breaths. Thank you!

My moment of joy is taking walks in the greenway near by home. I love being outdoors and fortunately, the weather has been cooperating.

I missed you Ginny! I try to slow down and take time to rest when I am overwhelmed. Book club sounds like a great idea and it is so nice and important that women there made you feel welcome. Have a lovely week and much love to you!
