Looking Back to Move Forward

Do you ever look back at your old blog posts?  I do.  It's interesting to read where I was even a month ago in my thinking about creativity and to reflect upon what impact my new ideas or resolutions have made in my creative life.  A month ago I wrote that I was going to slow down and enjoy what I was painting.  In looking at my previous month's blog posts I realized that there was a lot of emphasis on getting better. There is nothing wrong with becoming a better painter or writer or singer or dancer. But for me when the goal is to get better, the joy seems less.  I am finding that when the intention is to enjoy what I am doing I don't even worry about getting better.  Instead of criticizing my work I find myself noticing what I like about the painting or the blog post.  I also know that when I feel positive about what I am creating I want to create more.  I am inspired to try something new just for fun or to learn a new technique not because I need to get better but because learning and growing are a part of who I am.
The words that we speak to ourselves make a huge difference in the way we live our lives. Now when I paint I remind myself that I want to feel joy and to have fun. And if in the process I happen to get even a little bit better that will just be icing on the cake.

When you share your gifts and talents with the world, magic happens.  Let the magic begin!
                                                                                                                                              Ginny

Enjoying what you are doing takes a lot of awareness and living in the moment. We live so fast now that we forget. Thanks for the reminder. :)

You must have read my mind...it's amazing to come to this post today. Recently, I had an inner critic attack and thought about stopping my writing, but, like you, I focused on what I enjoy about it...the puzzle of putting a story together, getting the characters to talk to each other and learning more about writing.

While I may not get lots of awards or recognition for my writing, it does give me great pleasure. If I step away from the ego part of it, I realize how much FUN I have in writing:~)

I liked how you closed this post. It is important to hear what we say to ourselves about our creativity. I need to remind myself it's okay to play and color outside the lines. It's like that saying "dance like nobody's watching."

Happy day to you, Ginny

More wise words, Ginny. Setting an intention to enjoy what we are doing is important. I'm learning to let go of the value judgements -- (better, worse), and just create. I like your idea of looking at old blog posts to see where we've been, something I rarely do. Have a relaxing weekend.

I love what you wrote in your post today. To me art is about having fun. If something doesn't work, I cut it up into backgrounds for cards and keep on having fun. Your colors of blue and green above are so lovely.

Hi Ginny. I so love reading your posts. I agree with you. My goal for this year is to get at least good at abstract art. I find when I put myself in that box I am not good at all and a bit frustrated. When I let go of that year deadline and just enjoy what I am doing things fall right into place. We are too hard on ourselves LOL
I love your art and always feel a joy in it.
Have a wonderful weekend

Hi Ginny,

What can I say, you've written exactly what I believe!
There is always room for improvement, for mastery of an art form and seeing the change in your work but best of all it's how much you enjoy the process more than looking to the finished piece, that in the end is your gift.Love the serenity of the painting, gorgeous choice of colours. Have great weekend.

Beautiful soft calm painting! Ginny this is a perfect reminder to find joy first! It's not worth it if you're not happy while doing it! You've heard it before ....."do what you love, the money will come secondary"....well in your case it's probably do what you love and improvement will follow!! I find Lynn a testament to that by working in pen only!
