Living Life at Eighty - Recognizing Our Principles

“We must adjust to changing times and still hold to unchanging principles.”
                                                         Jimmy Carter

As an eighty year old I have seen major changes both in the world and the people around me.  Some of the changes are easy to adapt to and make the world a better place.  We are living in an era where the changes that some want, go against everything I believe in. This is where the principles that have been with me since childhood make every day decisions so much easier to make and defend.

Recently I read a quote by Mahatma Gandhi which I think in today’s political climate is important to remember. "We must be prepared to displease the dearest ones for the sake of principle". This not always easy to do when you are talking about those you love.  In reading both the quote by Jimmy Carter and Mahatma Gandhi I noticed that they both begin with the words: We must. Our principles are not something we can take out when it is convenient and put away if they don’t fit the narrative of the day.  As President Dwight Eisenhower said, “A people that values its privileges above its principles soon loses both.”  I value truth and honesty, kindness and compassion, empathy and caring.  A world without any of them seems cold and unwelcoming.  What are the principles that guide you throughout each day?  Have they changed as the world has or have they become stronger as you see the importance of them in your daily life?  I would love to know your thoughts on Jimmy Carter’s quote above.

When you share your gifts and talents with the world magic happens.
                                                           Let the magic begin!

This is great and I especially love what you said on your post regarding being “consciously aware” of our principles. Too often in life we don’t take time to reflect We think of ourselves as someone with “high morals, good character, strong principles” but we should all be repeatedly reevaluating, reassessing and as you said staying “consciously aware” that we are actively pursuing those principles in ourselves and those we support.

My mother was a teacher. She had just retired when she passed away at age 66 far too young. she kept a sign in all of her classrooms with 3 rules. Be kind. Be safe. Be polite. I always go back to that when I think about my principles
