This Sunday I was asked to choose a picture from my file for Kat's Intuitive Photojournaling assignment. As I was looking through my pictures, I was again drawn to the above picture and to the sparkles on the water. That was when I was reminded once again that beauty is in the eye of the beholder What may be a blown out spot to one person can be a sparkle to me. And that's ok! So no more worrying about techniques. For now it is enough to be outside with my camera, taking pictures, and enjoying each and every special moment!
Since I began my love of photography, I have resisted learning a lot about the techniques involved in taking pictures. This is very unusual for me because teaching and learning are as much a part of me as is my name. But I knew that at least for awhile I just wanted to enjoy the process and learn by doing rather than by reading or being taught what to do. Last December I finally decided it was time to take a class on how to correctly take a picture. Let me be sure to say the teacher was excellent and very kind when discussing our pictures. Before the class I really liked the above picture. I liked the way the water sparkled and the way the waves curled. When I brought my picture to class to share, I learned that the sparkles were really blown out spots and that there was probably a better way to take this picture. Because I tend to be a perfectionist, this definitely changed the way I viewed the picture.

When I get the "blown out" sparkles I am giddy with my photos - it just reminds me of how the sun was dancing on the water. I love water vacations and when I can catch the sun and water together I am just happy!

Ginny, this is an interesting post, and it seems like you made your own conclusion about why you like your photo. Good for you!! There are sparkles on the water, and the waves are gentle and foamy. I too experienced a similar remark about one of my photos, that my technique was not perfect, however, it is still one of my favorite photos and it hangs on our living room wall. I am glad you are enjoying your photo too. Thank you for sharing.

I can see why this image is special to you. It has wonderful 1/3, 2/3 compositional space divisions, with a dynamic diagonal, and three significant wave shapes - all signs of artistic picture making! With the light and sparkle, I can hear the waves roll in and feel the spray..... in other words, I can relate to the experiences that are pictured here. And that is power of photography!!!!

Yay! I'm so glad that this assignment made you go back and rediscover that you love this photo. "Technically correct" only gets you so far. Your instincts and your heart take you the rest of the way to getting images you love, like this one. I, too, love the sparkles in this. Your composition is beautiful! I can feel the sun on my face and a light breeze as I watch the sparkles dance on the waves moving in, all from this one image. The great thing about learning more - now you know those sparkles are blown out, and you can CHOOSE for them to be there. That's artistic license! Keep it up!

I love this photo! I view the "blown out parts" as sparkles too, and your composition with this is perfect. I am so glad you revisited this photo and feel the love for it again. Like you said, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. No one but the photographer can know the feeling that he/she was trying to convey, or capture.
