One of my goals for this year is to paint more and to learn more about how to become a better artist. I have been reading a lot about painting and photography and one of the things that comes up often is recognizing your own style. I realized after looking at the pictures that I paint or take, that my style is very simple. My pictures usually involve nature and the picture will evoke some sort of emotion or memory for me and hopefully for others. This is something that I painted awhile ago. It has a long way to go as far as technique but when I look at it I always think of my sister and I sitting at the beach talking as we watch the boats go by. It is a great memory. I would to love to know more about your style and how it developed.

I love that your painting is filled with such a wonderful memory (and water - your painting reminds me of wonderful beach time)! I'm still working on defining my style but when I started I wanted a clear idea right away. The universe had other plans. I am noticing what I am drawn to when I am in a museum, on the street, or reading a magazine. I also had an "outsider" look at many pieces of my art to tell me what she noticed was similar in all of them. The toughest part for me right now is recognizing how I am my own worst critic. I am happy to say I am closer now than when I started, but I have no idea when I will have my style defined...

A lovely painting, Ginny, and even better that it evokes such beautiful memories for you. I don't think I really have a style as yet...I'm still growing as an artist so it's constantly changing. I started out painting Folk Art before moving onto realism. Now, I lean towards sketching in my journals....sometimes, my sketches are simple and loose and, other times, they are more detailed and realistic. I enjoy experimenting and playing with many styles, I guess. :)

Your style may be simple but it is full of information,

I think that style evolves and changes over time... I had years at art college where I spent a lot of time experimenting and trying to find my style, and I spent years and years trying to find it, but then I went back and did a masters in Creativity theory and found out that it is there no matter what we do and so now I just trust and go with the flow a lot more, and I am so much happier... my style is fairly realistic and I like being able to render what I see in my head and not get too caught up in the "creative side"... I think you are well on your way and I really look forward to following your journey...xx
